Traveling with Your ESA: What You Need to Know
Current airline policies and travel tips for ESA and PSD owners.
By ESA Crew Editorial Team · Published January 2026
Traveling with an emotional support animal or psychiatric service dog requires understanding current airline policies and preparing properly for your trip.
Airline Policies for ESAs
As of 2021, the Department of Transportation no longer requires airlines to accommodate emotional support animals. This means most airlines now treat ESAs as regular pets, subject to pet fees and cargo restrictions.
If you plan to fly with your ESA, contact your airline in advance to understand their specific pet policy, including:
- Pet fees and cabin vs. cargo requirements
- Carrier size requirements
- Health certificate requirements
- Breed or species restrictions
Airline Policies for PSDs
Psychiatric service dogs are recognized as service animals under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). Airlines must accommodate PSDs at no additional charge. However, airlines may require:
- A completed DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form
- Proof of vaccinations and health
- The dog to be harnessed and well-behaved at all times
Plan Ahead
Airline policies change frequently. Always check with your specific airline at least 48 hours before your flight to confirm requirements.
Ground Travel Tips
For travel by car, bus, or train, policies vary by carrier. Amtrak does not currently allow ESAs but does accommodate service dogs. Greyhound and other bus lines generally follow similar policies.
Hotel Stays
Hotels are not covered under the FHA the same way as permanent housing. Many hotels treat ESAs as pets and may charge fees. However, service dogs (including PSDs) must be accommodated without fees under the ADA.
Preparing for Your Trip
- Carry your ESA or PSD letter with you
- Bring vaccination records
- Pack food, water, and any medications for your animal
- Research pet-friendly accommodations in advance
